Portraiture by Richard J Taylor
According to the National Portrait Gallery...Portraits are making a comeback and
this area of work is incredibly important to me....it is far more just taking someone's picture.
It
presents
me with the responsibility to capture in my photographs something of a person's nature
and character. As my father told me, not to do so will mean photographs
that are "hollow and lifeless" so it's a constant challenge for in a
what is a
difficult field of work. This has been made loud and clear with my recent
exposure to the works of John Couzins and his mentor Ida Kar.
What follows is work is partially a learning curve but mostly success in terms
of character works. All
work is undertaken on medium format film and/or large format 5x4 or 10x8 sheet film.
These, even today remain the most exquisite of any photographic media in my
opinion.
The result is a return to classic values and my father's
doctrine: "Naturally by Richard Taylor...." and also to remain
true to the brilliance of the photographic artists of the 20th century who have
truly shown us the way to work in this field. And remember, portraits can
be for professional or personal reasons....it's the only way to really preserve
who you are....
