Born in 1936 in Folkestone, she
was very artistic from a
young age and
wanted to attend the local art school, and she was lucky enough to
get apprenticed to a
very old established firm Hawksworth Wheeler.
Run by
Mr Greville she would help with all aspects of the business. She
was very good at retouching photos and painting backgrounds which was the
fashion in those days
and required great skill. She
went on day release to the Folkestone art school
After she finished her 7
year apprenticeship
she went to the press department of the firm, where she met
Richard Taylor, who had just finished his national service, they worked
together for several years leaving in about 1957.
They set up their own business in the garden shed of Pam’s
father doing photos for friends and family, and one or two
weddings. At this time they were also working for a Mrs Carpenter who had a shop
in the Burgate, Canterbury, and also
a travel shop on the Folkestone harbour, where in the summer Pam and Richard
would do passport photos for
day trippers.
In 1960 they started their
own business proper. Earning
contracts with Southern Television, Kent
Messenger, as well as other local
and national publications. In the
same period they
were the most sought
after social, wedding and
portrait photographers in the area. (there
are today some 1100 weddings in the archive)
They expanded and were very successful until things started
to go wrong, first they
lost the contract with television, because they were using too
much movie
film over stills.
Then Pam
spent two months in hospital and they lost a lot of business in
her absence as there
was nobody on the premises. Sadly the business only
lasted a short time after this although
they returned to their trade in the 1980s with Whitecliffe Photographic.
The success resumed in this period as it wasn't long before they became THE
people to have doing your wedding!
Tragically Mum contacted cancer and passed away in May 1990, she is very much
missed by many many people to this day.
